What a Aries ascendant means

An Aries ascendant is traditionally linked with initiative and directness: a tendency to meet life head-on and to start things.

Your ascendant describes how you tend to meet the world and sets the houses of your chart. It is one part of a fuller picture that also includes the Moon sign and planetary periods (Dashas).
